I had a 12 year old in my 6th grade class last year. She was one of my favorites and was always the one in charge of my birthday surprises and teacher appreciation parties. She has done so much for me this last year, but the thing is she told me about her home problems with her parents, therefore I am always the one she comes to for advice or just to talk. She comes back to visit me periodically, and recently told me she ordered me a Christmas present. Should I get her a present for Christmas? Would it be socially rude for me not to buy her anything considering she's done so much for me?

She is no longer in my classroom, she's now in the 7th grade and 13 years old.

I lean toward NOT giving her a gift at all.
However, in the course of talking with people, if they mention that they are looking for something and I happen to find one at a thrift store or retail store, I will pick it up for them. If you don't make a big deal of the gift you give her that would be better.

You could get her a gift certificate to an ice cream shop. It's definitely not personal and everyone loves ice cream.

You might consider running this by your principal, just so it doesn't seem shady. Also, I would suggest getting a gift card or something that isn't TOO personal.

Also, I believe it's fairly common for students to get teachers presents and not recieve gifts in return, so I don't believe you are obligated.
