A technician usually stays in a lab and focuses on one area--blood analysis, for example. You might find something with a 2-year degree but usually more is required. An investigator usually has a four-year or masters degree in chemistry, biology, and other laboratory sciences. There are some jobs in CSI work, but there is no shortage in applicants. If you aren't really into chemistry, you may need to rethink.
