I always do my best to make you feel better. I may not make you laugh but I hope I can at least make you smile ;-)

It doesn't really bother me that much, though I used to think they must be from another planet or something. Then I read that a lot of people actually LIKE to be cheered up when they are sad--even when they are sad about a death. And now, I have a boyfriend who is one of those people; he feels his sadness all in a rush very intensely, but for a short period of time. He wants to be cheered up, or do something fun, or even watch a funny show! My way is very different; it's hard for me to cry, and I feel sad for many days, and funny shows irritate me. I've learned to communicate my different way of dealing, and I've learned to accept other people's way, too.

Because when you're sad you have to finish being sad before you can be glad again. It may take a while for it to happen but then you can't be sad all the time and will eventually come out of it. Your friends and family want to pull you out of your state of mind before you are ready because they don't want to see you that way. They like you better when you are in a good mood. Haven't you tried to cheer up a sad friend before because you don't want to see them that way?

I think that you should tell them in a nice, respectful way that you appreciate the fact that they are trying to cheer you up. If you'd rather be alone then kindly tell them that or if you would like to talk about what's making you sad then ask them if you could talk to them about it. Remember, if your family or friends try to make you laugh when you are sad that means that they care for you and want to help you. I hope that my advice helps you.

Yes. I mihgt be crying and everyone is around me telling me funny stories and things, and when I laugh i feel like my emotions are at a battle. Im both sad and happy. Its not a bad feeling, its just that i cant decide wether to be sad or happy =]

YES. One of my friends always does this. Everyone always thinks I never smile (which is such a lie, I'm laughing as I type this) just because I like the colors red and black and people think that's 'emo'.
But anyway, sometimes when I'm sad, I just want to be alone.

Yes, Ma'am, I do find that bothersome, but I try not to hold it against people. Few folks are comfortable dealing with the sadness of others, so they feel compelled to try to "change" that state instead of allowing them to work through it naturally. We learn this over time, so you can't hold a person accountable for something they haven't mastered yet.

Bother? No. If you can't laugh about it, what can you do? Who actually feels better moping around? The problem is not with them trying to make you laugh, it's that your perception of laughing about the situation is crooked. Do you find laughing disrespectful? Laughing is just trying to connect and have a good time, which is generally what people need.

I accept the good intention, and might cry even harder as a laugh about it... for knowing this person is trying so hard to cheer me up... feeling someone else's compassion tends to do that... so, no, it does not.

Yes, because it's good to be sad every once in a while to get your feelings out. That way you have a contrast for when you are happy.
