Power down and unplug the system
Open the case and find a suitable place to mount the drive.
If the new drive is PATA/ISA:
Dismount the current drive and change the jumpers to "Master"
Change the jumpers on the new drive to "Slave"
Mount the drives and use the second connector on the flat cable on the motherboard to connect to the new drive. Make sure pin 1 matches the colored stripe on the cable.
Find a loose molex power connector (4-wires from the power supply) and plug it into the drive.

If the drive is SATA, you don't need to touch the current drive. Mount the drive and plug in the small flat interface cable to the drive and the next open slot on the motherboard. Plug the power connector into the drive and the power supply 4-wire molex connector.

Make sure everything is tight and clean and button up the case, plug in the power cord and power up the system.
Windows should prompt to initialize the new drive. Format the drive and you're in business.

If its a pata drive (should have 40 pins in a row) then put the drive in the drive bay (open up the case first) the either plug it into the second connector on the ide cable. If there isn;t an open conncector you have to either get an ide cable with 2 connectors (1 for motherboard, 1 for main dirve, one for second), then set the jumpers on the drive to cable select. If its a sata drive then simply plug the sata cable into the hard drive and the other end into a free sata connector on the motherboard. In both cases plug either a molex or sata power connector into the hard drive, and format in the OS

If the hard drive has an OS, you wouldnt be able to make the OS run on the PC (unless it's Windows 98 or older). You would just make the hard drive run as a slave drive to the existing one.

There are jumper pins on the hard drive. Set it to slave.
Place the hard drive in an empty hard drive bay on your PC and plug the wires/ribbons (whether it's SATA or IDE). Make sure you plug both the data cable and the power cable.
After that, just turn on your computer. Windows XP will automatically detect your hard drive. If it doesnt, you will need to go to your BIOS setup (during bootup) and set the hard disk.
