In the physical sense? Well scientists have apparently isolated the longevity gene, and are trying to figure out what to do with the thing. In theory there is no reason why our bodies can't regenerate permanently. Every cell in our body is replaced on a regular basis, so all that would be necessary is to hold the little bit of DNA that causes physical ageing at, say, 25 years, and scrub out long lasting toxins every few years.
Or if you want to get even more sci-fi (but don't knock it.....robots were sci-fi before fact, moon landings and space shuttles too...) then we could find a way to stream our minds over into a network or computer one data cell at a time, preserving consciousness. That way our minds would, in theory, be able to last forever on hardware.
Or, you could get religion, obey all the rules, and die.

So there are a few theoretical possibilities. Problem is that to be immortal only ever involves being immortal up to the point people are looking at you, so scientifically proving that it is possible is, in fact, impossible. Ah well.

Regards, and may you live for a very long time :D

At present? Not with our current level of technology. There are those out there, however, who know enough to treat death as an engineering problem rather than an inevitable fact that should just be accepted. Life is no longer a magical black box; we now know quite a bit about just how life works.

And what we've learned is, far from being intelligently designed, life forms (including humans) are full of imperfections, flaws, and gross inefficiencies right down to the molecular level. The good news is, that bioengineers in the coming years and decades should be able to greatly improve both the length and quality of human life. There are already some pretty radical advances in the research pipeline, stuff like artificial blood substitutes that perform better than real blood; new organs that can be grown from your own tissue; promising new cancer treatments; methods to test for and correct genetic diseases, both for fetuses in the womb and even for adults. Check out the first link below for more info.

Once we have a better understanding of biology, and more mature nanotechnology, then we can move on to the next step: mind uploading. Once you can transfer (or transform) your mind into a quantum supercomputer, you will be well on the road to immortality. No more aging, diseases, degradation from toxins or poor nutrition; in short, immunity from the great majority of things that eventually kill people.

Furthermore, once we've gotten mind uploading down pat, we will then be free to vastly accelerate human evolution through various forms of mind augmentation. Near limitless memory capacity, greater creativity, greater depth of thought (far greater than is possible with nootropics today), increased rationalism and cleverness. At that point we will have become true posthumans, and our potential (and our lives) will be virtually limitless.

you would never know.... you might live 1000 more years but then die... you might live 100000 years and then die... its really not possible to see into the future so even if someone has been around a very long time it does not mean they are immortal because if they died in 1000000 years it means they are not immortal. I am tired and cant properly express myself, but I hope I made sense. It is an impossible question to answer, as we do not know the future of any person.

We are immortal because who we are is spirit and our spirit survives the death of the body. The body is like a set of clothes or a space suit that our spirit uses to work in this world. We don't usually remember previous lives while we're incarnated, that doesn't mean we didn't have previous lives. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience so we don't really die.

Immortal in the sense of never physically dying, I would have to say no. Immortal in the sense of living on in the memory of others, yes. We have thousands of examples.
After all, the second meaning of 'Immortal' means infamy in perpetuity.

To be immortal you will require everything that dose not exist unless you have a religon that says that you must do something then in the afterlife you will be immortal. Hoped it helped.

Long after my grandfather is gone, I , still, carry with me many things that he said to me or taught me. Whenever I do those things , even today, his image still flashes in front of me. In fact his thought preceeds the action that I take.
As for as I am concerned my grandfathet still lives. I am sure all of us have such vivd experiences in life. If it can happen to the others , for all we know , someone could see us . too , in that position.
