my friend started her baby on rice cereal at 4 months and he's not even 6 yet and she gives him baby applesauce, veggies, etc. is this normal? i'm asking because i'm due in march and i like to know these things, and i guess it also depends on your peditrician's recommendations, but i was just wondering what your opinions are. thanks.

It's suggested that a baby only have breastmilk and/or formula for the first 6 months. Research has showed that babies who dont start solids until 6 months have less digestive issues and allergies.

They say rice cereal is ok after 4 months, however, it is better to wait till 6 month for actual baby fruits and veggies.

The rice cereal should only be done once a day, a very little bit and runny. It is to teach how to eat from a spoon and swallow. I started fruit once a day at 6 months, then at 6 1/2 months 2 times a day. Now he does 3 small meals a day at 71/2 months.

Most and all of babies nutrition comes from breast milk, but this is to help introduce new flavors and textures.

According to the Doctor you aren't supposed to start rice cereal until 6 months. I start rice cereal for my boys at 6 months I gave them a week or two to get used to the texture of the rice and then I added them on veggie type baby food, sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots. I gave them a week to get used to each different type of veggie and then after trying the veggies I introuduced them to some fruit. I think it is important to start veggies first becuase if you introuduce fruit then they will get used to that sweet taste. you can also look at gerber.com : http://www.gerber.com/phase/home?phase=21

No it's not normal babies are not suppose to start veggies and fruits at 6 months because of reaction to the food can cause them to break out i hop she is not feeding her baby all that food all at one time you need to wait 2-3 days in between to try new foods.

The standard belief is at 6 months old.that is when WIC starts giving you baby cereal and the age that doctors suggest introducing solids. For most babies before 6 months their digestive system hasn't fully matured to handle food yet. However I know personally with my son we introduced cereal a bit earlier simply becuase he showed signs he was ready for solids. He would reach for our food and lick his lips and when we offered him the cereal he was able to "chew" and move it to the back of the mouth to swallow without choking.
In all honesty at 6 months even the point of solids is not for nutrition but to accustom them to eating from a spoon instead of sucking on a nipple. You'll know when your baby is ready for something more then breastmilk/formula.

depends on the child, it doesn't hurt them at all or cause allergies. So its really up to the child and parents.
Most people say older. I believe that a baby will let you know when they are hungry.

whenever you feel your child is ready.. there are really no ages for this just use your judgment...usually little ones will let you know when they are ready...
