Only 15 percent of the country is arable. Except for wheat and coffee, however, South Africa is not only self-sufficient in its food requirements but normally exports many crops such as cane sugar, corn, fresh fruits, canned fruits and vegetables, and wine. Over the Highveld and Karroo, sheep and Angora goats provide wool and mohair, which are major export items.

Mining minerals and petroleum production are two of the country's most valuable resourses.
