80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

It might seem slightly pessimistic, but this is my view. Whether you die right now or when you are old, the result is still the same. That is you cease to exist or be conscious. Therefore you might as well make the most of the life you have and try to achieve as much as possible and be happy and then die, rather than just die now. I know the result is the same in the end, but you might as well make the most of life since you find yourself in it. I hope you understand what i'm trying to say.

That by having lived, we will have made a difference, that we have changed the world around us, and influenced the future. Yes, we are dust in the wind, and all our works will be forgotten by those that come after us - but yet, they will still be different than they would have been without us. It is up to us to strive, to work at the tasks we find for our hands to do, and hope that we leave the world a better place for our having been there.

foals* - According to 'Abraham' the purpose of life is to "add unto all that has come before." Life moves in one direction only - forward. Your life (and everything that you do, experience and learn during your lifetime) enhances the whole of existence (God, the Universe, etc.). Each life and each lifetime lived is important.

Also, your body dies, but 'you' are eternal and will never cease to exist.

This is like asking "What is the point in owning a car if that car will one day be a heap of junk?"

Imagine what you would say to a person who actually used that as an argument against ever buying a car. If you can do this, you can probably answer your question on your own.

What's the point in dying and ceasing to exist, without life and existence?

*sigh*
Well... You only live once. You only get one chance at life. Doesn't it make sense to take advantage of that if you're just going to die anyway?
I know what you're trying to say, but the reality is, we're here, and we're alive. So, we're dealing with it, and a lot of people are enjoying that fact.

OK... someone needs either a girlfriend or at least a pet here.

So if you ask life itself, the point is to get laid and make more kids which will ask the same question until they get laid for the first time.

But once you pass that limit life becomes pretty self-explaining and you will learn to laugh thinking about yourself asking this question in the first place.

Our species thrives on knowing more then it did the day before, as such each of us are vital to the future of the race. We must learn and pass it on to the next generation.
