So all countries should celebrate Thanksgiving on the same day? Unlike Christmas and Easter, Thanksgiving may be different for those countries that have a Thanksgiving holiday. In the US. For the US and Canada it's a moving holiday.. That is to say that unlike Christmas or New Years it has no fixed date. In the US it falls on the fourth Thursday in November. In Canada it's the second Monday in October. So this year it fell on October 8th in Canada and November 22 in the US. Next year it will be October 13th in Canada and November 27th.

Each country has set the date for the Thanksgiving celebration independently. Neither country consulted the other. In the US, Thanksgiving was celebrated at different times by different states for many years, though generally the celebrations were held after the harvest. Then, Abraham Lincoln declared the LAST Thursday in November as the official Thanksgiving Day for the US, and made it a national holiday, in 1863. It wasn't until the 1941 that the 4th Thursday in November was established as the official date.

Canada was probably looking for an excuse to proclaim a holday in October.
The U.S. probably wanted to use it as an excuse to remind people that it was time to begin their Christmas shopping and make the merchants rich again.
