Where the D should be is a smudge like dot I have two 1979 quarters and they both have this (looks to be an error) smudge...Thanks

In 1979 the mint mark punches were replaced, some coins struck that year have a good looking D due to a new punch, others have a bad one, due to the use of the old punch. The old punch coins are not considered an error and there is no value difference given in any price guides. I get the drift that the old punch was made around 1934 so by 1979 I can see it looking like a blob. The min marks were hand punched into the dies until 1990, after that they are now punched directly to the production hub. Hope this helps.
