They are expensive because of the materials and things they are made out of. There is also a lot of technology in the way they make the jackets... as in, they keep out the cold, repel water, and block the wind better than most jackets. And they are worth the money if you live in a colder climate. Arkteryx and Mountain Hardware also make really good jackets. Possibly even better.
If you want to buy them cheaper you can wait until the end of the season when most stores that sell northface mark them down a lot. Sometimes as much as 50% off. Check with your local ski shops, sports stores, and outdoor outfitters that sell them and see when they mark down all of their winter gear. That's when you can get northface jackets the cheapest.
