I don't really know what it will do to a penny, but I do know something really interesting about coca-cola.

There was an experiment done with four drinkable liquids and a human tooth. There was water, milk, orange juice, and classic coca-cola. They placed a human tooth in each glass of liquid for one whole week and noted the results.

Nothing happened in the water. The milk stained the tooth. The orange juice put little holes all in it. (Due to the acid.) The coca-cola had completely eaten it. It was gone.

After hearing this, I don't drink coke anymore.

Well, pennies don't rust, its corrosion and stuff.

But yeah, it'll take whatever off because of the acidity of it.
Its not an immediate chemical reaction, you may have to leave it in overnight or even for a few days, but it will usually take it off, as long as the penny isn't older than 1990 because the makeup of a penny before 1990 is different. Thats why if you weigh an 1971 penny vs a 2002 penny it'll have a different weight.

"Rust" is specifically iron oxide. USA one-cent pieces, with the exception of some from WWII, don't contain significant quantities of iron. Therefore Coca-Cola could not be demonstated to remove "rust" from recent-issue once-cent pieces (commonly mis-called "pennies").

Coca-Cola is acidic. It will consume many sorts of *oxidation* on various metals. On some it will continue to consume the metal itself, if left on too long.

Pennies don't rust. They oxidize. And a pencil eraser will do the trick into removing oxidation. Haven't really tried putting pennies in a glass of coke.

pennies don't rust... they tarnish

I dont know know about coke doing this, but if you squirt some katchup on a plate and place an old penny in it, after 20 - 30 minutes, it will be as shinny as new.

I don't know fore sure. It is a rumor I heard when I was in ROTC. We had to polish our brass and was told Coke could be a substitute. it would be a good question for Myth-busters.

Yes it will. Leave it overnight and see. It doesn't remove rust, just the oxidisation, to leave it shiny.
