I agree with Heather, usually, putting a plastic bag on top of it can help if the card is just worn out, but if the magnetic strip has been damaged by a big scratch or cut then you need to replace it.

Request for a replacement credit card from
the issuing bank ( tell them the card won't
work anymore ). Usually, the replacement
card is free.
When the replacement card arrives, try it
once. If ok, cut the old card into two or
more pieces then discard the pieces
separately ( for security reasons )

My wife had a wallet/purse with a magnetic clasp and it ruined 5 cards in two months before I convinced her to get rid of it! The bank kept telling her that couldn't be the cause but once she did it never happened again!

To save yourself grief you should call the company that issued the card and ask them to send you a free replacement. You will get it in a couple of days after you call.
They use that plastic bag trick that Heather suggested in the supermarket near me and it works most of the time.

Nothing. But you can order another one for about five $ from your credit card provider.

Just cover it with a grocery bag and it should work fine. It was a little trick I learned working in retail.

Sounds like it's been demagnetized. You need to get a new card.
