Nationals receive - Lastings Milledge
Mets receive - Ryan Church and Brian Schneider
Milledge is supposed to be a beast of an OF while Church will never be anything great as he is 29 and I didn't see the logic in trading Milledge for a catcher when they just got a catcher before. Why not trade Milledge for a top catching prospect instead of veterans that won't make that big of an impact? Am I wrong? Your thoughts please.

NO, your not wrong, this trade was stupid! As you mentioned, Milledge is a top ranked prospect, projected to be a star, and he is ony 23 I believe. Church is not a bad player, but he will neevr be a superstar. And he isn't exactly young for baseball being close to 30 years old. Schnider may be good at defense, but he can't hti at all. And they just traded for a catcher. It would have been smart to just sign Loduca, instead of having to scramble for a catcher. Last July it was whispeered that Billy Beane was in love with Milledge and would have dealt either Haren or Blanton to have him. Now shouldn't that have been the trade? Milledge for Haren- that makes sense. The Mets need pitching, they don't need an outfielder or a washe dup catcher, they need pitching. Luckily I'm not a Mets fan, if I was I would be very very angry right now. This trade mirrors that of Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano, remember that one? Omar Minya could have gotten so much mroe for Miledeg, I do see he is trying to build a winning club for 08, but he really screwed up, and the Nats got a steal.

Milledge is a guy with a huge attitude problem and could very likely be a problem for the Nationals at some point in time. Mets, by far, got the better end of the deal in my opinion.

I look at this trade as being punishment towards Lastings Milledge. The Mets were simply sick of his prima donna attitude and indifference towards the veterans. Do you remember the stories about him? Heck, the Mets would have unloaded the headache to about anyone, but it seems the Nats were willing to take on the talents of Milledge and the migraines he will cause (the next Milton Bradley, anyone?)To a fault, the Mets would rather lose without the future talents of Milledge than win with the insufferable bore.

The mets are worried so much about their defense why they traded for another catcher. I still think they got the best end of the trade. I heard they weren't that happy with Milledge performance overall, too.

It's not dumb but its more of a Buddy deal like the McHale/Ainge deal of Garnett. Acta probably owes Minaya one for this trade.

When you look at the deal close up, Ryan Church isn't a bad player. He may be getting to and past his prime but he's always been a highly regarded prospect and he may connect for a big season if it is his year to blossom.

If they had traded Milledge a year or two ago he may have gotten back a pretty good pitching prospect.

Ryan Church is way better then people think. I've seen him play and for some reason he was out of favor with the Nats. Schneider is also a decent catcher - certainly better than some of their options like Torrealba. But I think with this one time will tell. You'll just have to see if Milledge is the real deal or was just hype, and we'll have to see if Schneider is over the hill.

My take...no GM is stupid.....if Milledge is really that good a prospect...someone out there would have given them a lot more..

Milledge therefore...is not as highly thought of in baseball circles as he is in fandom circles...

His minor league slugging pct is less than .500

He'll strike out about 125-140 times a year...with no real proven ability to hit the ball a long way..

This does not make him a bad player....he probably will be a very fine player who can help a lot of teams,,,

But there is nothing in his record that makes you stand up and shout..."Now That's a Future Superstar"...

That one is a headscratcher, and I have to wonder if there's more behind this deal than meets the eye. While Church is a decent player, I don't see why they'd trade a 23-year-old with great upside for the package they're getting. Everyone I know seems to be having the same reaction.

You're totally wrong. Church is a very underated OF good to replace Green in right. He didn't get noticed as a top young outfielder b/c he played for a crappy Washington team. Hr could be on the verge of stardome. Adding Schneider gives them an additional trade piece. Good deal for the Mets.

Milledge is a huge talent. The Mets should have gotten much more value.
