Or is it too late?
There is the sun heating more every year because of more hydrogen explosions.
There is the earth approaching the galaxy.
And, there is us, humans, exploiting everything.

Can we do something even though we are sold by our politicians. Who votes for them?
Do you care?
Or think there's nothing wrong really?

Planting is not the solution. We think that i f we put a tree on the ground it grows by itself. And that is why most efforts in re-forestation do not succeed. The care for the trees is after the planting.
Surely if all Greeks planted as many a five trees and took care of them at least for the first years of their lives we would have made a major step for the country. But the same should also do our neighbors for the effort to have full success.

There was never a greater need for reforestation in Greece.
There is speculation that Greece will soon become a desert and here is why:
Fires first destroy the trees.
Floods take over as there are no trees to stop the water.
The soil first becomes muddy and later sandy and dry from the sun.
Voila! Another Sahara is born!
In the meantime let the builders finish what nature started by building in the areas that the trees disappeared and we all will pay the consequences soon!
BTW we won't be called Subsaharans then, we will be the real Saharans!!

Start planting one at your front door, and probably you'll realize that growing trees is not that easy. Some will die. You'll have to take many things into consideration, like, how does the tree like the soil, or, will there artificial fertilization be necessary? Will the tree be able to stand a drought, or a wet season? What can I make of the tree in terms of usable wood, in order to plant new trees?
Sure, you can make donations to regions that have been struck by wildfires. I'd agree if you do. But consider what your money is used for, and ask before making a donation. I doubt that it's really used for reforestation.

I really like the new advert of WWF, in Greece. That says that it wont matter if we plant any tree, the only thing that will work is if people chance the way they think and act before it's to late. The forests can grow back in less then 10 years(seen it happen!), but if we burn them again or we built something on them (hotels and golfing areas in the Kaiafa area-Peloponnese and large areas for electricity from the sun in Messinia) then yes we are doomed!!!! The funny thing is that they have lost control(money!!), so they almost burned our history(Olympia and Vasses-temple of Apollon). Oupsss!!! So the people who are responsible for the disaster are never going to suffer, only us that live in those areas.

I perfectly agree with you. But the volunteers will not be as many as we could expect, as in our country only minority is interested in the environment.
At least let's persuade also as many as we can that they must respect the few trees there are in parks, even in the streets, and not destroy them, and hope that the State will make a campaign about how people who visit forests respect them and don't leave the garbage there. Many fires are starting from the existance of such garbage.
Don't you also think that there has to be some environmental education at schools?

We should have cared more than we actually do right now. The problem is that everybody now days is "occupied" with other problems, such as buying a new 4 x 4 or building a summer house etc.
Unfortunately our kids will pay the price.
And as for politicians? they get their pension after 4 years!

I will certainly do my part, the next time I go to Greece.
