I want to get a real Christmas tree this year

There is no more danger from a cut tree if it is kept watered properly than there is from an artificial tree which could short out and cause an electrical fire.

I prefer Fraisier or Noble firs, both are soft needled. Fraisers can usually be bought for about $20., Nobles are a bit more expensive. Douglas firs are inexpensive, but they have kind of wimpy branches, so you can't hang anything very heavy on them

You don't want an Austrian or Scotch pine, they have stiff sharp needles that poke you like little swords when you go to decorate them. They are what you get at the cut your own Christmas tree farms. White and Virginia pines are long needled and soft, but the branches are kind of wimpy when you go to hang ornaments on them, and you can't always find them. Balsam smells wonderful, but is kind of expensive and you cant always get them, either. Junipers, or cedars, that you sometimes can cut in the woods, have prickly foliage and leave stickers in your fingers. Blue Spruce is scarce, and expensive, but nice.

For smells, they all smell good. I like the firs best.

Whatever tree you get, please recycle it by taking it to a city collection point where they will chip them up for use as mulch, or a conservation department collection area, where they will use them as habitat for fish in lakes, or put it on a brush pile for habitat for small animals. Please don't waste it by burning it or putting it in your trash.

Blue spruces smell really nice.
What do you mean by better suited for children?
Do you mean less sharp? Well, blue spruces are very sharp, but the kids touch it once, and they'll never do it again.

You don't need a child proof tree, they will learn from experience.

I know you want a real tree, but the tree best suited for children is an artificial one. The branches don't break, the needles won't fall off, there's no tray of water to spill. And don't forget that the number one cause of fires in the home during the holidays is christmas trees. Do you really want to put your family at risk just for the sake of having a real tree?

best suited with children is something that has long needles. they dont hurt when they poke u when u r putting ornaments on . the most fragrent tree is the Concolor Fir. when u go tree shopping take ur kids with u and let them choose the tree that they like the most but try to steer them towards ur criteria
