Hate and anger are based upon the primary emotion of fear.
Hate is fear of a viewpoint or object you see as alien to your way of being, anger is fear of not getting what you want.
The antidotes for hate and anger are compassion, love and forgiveness.
Anger and hatred have their proper place as a defence mechanism in our consciousness, just as all other forms of fear do, they tend to keep up alive in threatening situations and are meant to make us more alert so that we can fight or flee.
When we hold on to these emotions long after an event, the damage it inflicts is upon ourselves.
To calm anger at another person, you must think like Christ did when he said, "Forgive them Father for they know not what they do."
You will find compassion when you start to think about what sort of life a person is leading that would cause them to behave in an unthinkable way.
Forgiveness is a perfectly selfish act in that it releases you from being held back or held up in life over an event.
You can write a letter to the person you feel anger or hatred for, admit you engaged them in a relationship, you played your part in deciding on that, tell them why you are angry then mail the letter. You will then feel a huge amount of relief. You can do this whether they ever really receive it or not.

For some people, it's good old apathy - if you don't care about anyone or anything, you don't love or hate them.
For others, it's lovingkindness, as explained by the Dali Llama in his book "The Art of Happiness".
And for yet others, it is death itself.
It is easy to say that love is an antidote, but in reality, just loving someone is rarely enough to dispel true hatred or anger.

Hate and anger are natural human emotions. You can not get rid of them. Why would you want to? Anger and hate fuel revolution, they fuel change. Without hate and anger, the world becomes complacent. See "A Brave New World."
The hate and anger I think you mean (hate crime, brutality, abuse, murder, etc.) is usually a reaction to fear. Fear of an action, a cause, a person, a difference, etc......The list is endless. The only way to get rid of that kind of anger and hate is to somehow alter the natural human reaction to it. Train children from the get-go that anger and hate is not an option. When we are faced with fear, the best thing to do is confront it head-on with understanding.
If that doesn't work, there's always Soma........

Let the emotions "pass" through you. Lest you "go" through them..
What we give, is what we receive, so we must not allow hate and anger to be given externally. If you are not within - you are without.
Peace and Blessings...

Understand that "hate" and "anger" are only a waste of your emotions, time and energy. Why bother with people/issues you can't stand - if you can't fix it or change it, remove it from your reality.

Yoda said it best...
"Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.... "
Confront your fears and understand where they come from and you will stop hate and anger before they start.

From the Dhammapada (The Sayings of the Buddha, Thomas Byrom, translator)
"With gentleness overcome anger
With generosity overcome meanness.
With truth overcome deceit."
Also,
"'Look how he abused me and beat me,
How he threw me down and robbed me.'
Live with such thoughts and you live in hate.
'Look how he abused me and beat me,
How he threw me down and robbed me.'
Abandon such thoughts, and live in love.
In this world
Hate never yet dispelled hate
Only love dispels hate.
This is the law,
Ancient and inexhaustible."
