My daughter is 14 and has very long(about 3 weeks) and heavy periods. She obviously gets very tired of these so we are thinking about using birth control to regulate her periods, but I've been wonder is 14 to young to be on birth control?

You should speak to her doctor and see what he or she recommends. There may be a problem going on for her to be having periods that last that long. But, a doctor could recommend birth control. I don't think there is an age limit for birth control meaning that if it's strictly for period regulation, but it might not be the best way to go for young teens....I don't know.

Not if she's having 3 week periods. That will be much harder on her body than bc pills.

There's no evidence that bc pills cause problems in young girls that have already started their periods. It doesn't mess up their ability to have their own cycles later.

I'd recommend talking to a good gyno about it. S/he will be able to reassure you, or steer you away from that if it's not a good idea. Your daughter should also be checked out to determine if there is an underlying medical reason for her long and heavy periods.

First, I am concerned at the length of your daughters periods. I once had a problem where my periods were that long, and it was due to an ovarian cyst problem. I would ask a gynecologist about that, and then ask the gyno about birth control. I got my period at 9 yrs. old, and I suffered really bad cramps and stuff. So I was put on the pill at age 10.

Your daughter needs to see a physician to rule out causes of her dysmenorrhea (painful periods) and menorrhagia (heavy periods) rather than arbitrarily putting her on birth control. Hormonal and endocrine (pituitary, adrenal, thyroid) disorders may be a factor here.

Because of your daughter's age, I hesitate to provide any links for disorders that might be responsible for her condition. We also don't know if your daughter has other health problems, is on medication, or is an appropriate weight for her height. This situation may need a physician's evaluation.

there is absolutely no wrong age as long as you have your period. I was put on it at age 12 for the same reason.

im not sure about the age. but just letting you know that people who start birth control early and use it regularly often get breast cancer.
