I am a MRI technologist at a hospital that does high risk ob and neonatal icu care. We frequently scan pregnant women, it is considered safe, however MRI is not the first choice in fetal imaging that would still be ultrasound. One problem with MRI and babies is that they just don't lesson when told to hold still. MRI does not have radiation. I know lots of people confuse MRI and CT. Usually when I get a pregnant women it is because they did an ultrasound that is abnormal and they need additional clarity to prove or disprove the problem. We also check for placental previa and uterus issues. Sometimes we need to scan mommy if she is having severe headaches or neurological problems. We also get to see pregnant women who come in as trauma patients because imagine this there back hurts. It probably hurt prior to the accident but we have to make sure mom is ok. We try not to scan very early pregnancies and long term studies have not be conclusive yet since MRI is a fairly new modality in the world of imaging. As it stands if there is a problem with baby or mom the risk out ways the benefits especially compared to the CT scan with radiation and is considered safe. I added some links to articles regarding fetal imaging for you to verify this information. Also I forgot to mention that pregnacy scan at our hospital always have a radiologist present to make sure the images cover everything properly the first time around and you should not be given contrast.

Having An Mri While Pregnant

I agree with the person above. The risk to the mother is minimal (Seen as safe) . The risk to the fetus is generally unknown. -No association between the MRI scan and disease/complications have been found. It is true that it is a far better choice than CT/X-ray for this reason.
I have even seen studies in which healthy pregnant women had MRI scans for research -something I would not recommend.

There has to be a good reason to have a MRI scan. Ask your doctor about the possible risks.

An MRI only scans your head so I'm not sure it would affect the baby it all. They would place a lead apron over your belly, but make sure you talk to a doctor about it before going through with it.

In general, but if they are viewing your head, they can protect the baby. If the mother's situation is dire, the effect upon the fetus may be a calculated risk.
