if you have access to a cooling system pressure tester, with engine completely cool, remove all spark plugs.pressurize cooling system to 16 pounds of pressure.wait about five minutes and then have an assistant crank the engine over, watch for coolant coming out of any of the cylinders, don't stand with head over engine,if head gasket is blown or head is cracked you will definitely see coolant coming out.I own a 86 and 95 escort and have worked on ford escorts for 30 plus years,if there is water or murky green slime looking stuff in oil fill cap, this is normal on all escorts.my 86 escort has 174 thousand miles on it and has original head and headgasket on it.Best car ford ever made.Good luck

It could be a head gasket or a cracked head the only way to find out is to have the head removed and checked but the mechanic will be able to tell very easily if the head gasket is bad. Which it most likely is. If you didn't beat on the car than is probably just the gasket.

Your fears may well be correct, but have the system pressure tested and/or get a block test done. The pressure test will let you know if the coolant system is holding it's own. The block test will either confirm or allay your fears about the head and/or gasket.

Is the engine overheating? Is the engine running erratic?Sound like running with misfire?Loosing power? Is there white smoke from tail pipe?Is it?Then you got blown head gasket or cracked head. But if nothing going on like above, you're good.Just flush your engine, put new oil and filter and continue drive your car.

Probably the head gasket. If the head is aluminum,it may be warped,i doubt it though i think the Escort in 2000 are still cast iron,if you never really over heateted it,it's the gasket.Or intake.
