The European Union started as merely a trade agreement. It
has since morphed into what it is today.

This seems like a mere trade agreement, and not any sort of merger. If it were a partnership between equals, as a trade agreement it might not be so bad. But it isn't, so it's probably not a good idea. It is certainly less encompassing than the European Union, which while all its member states maintain their sovereignty, they have agreed on certain frameworks and institutions to advance the causes of trade and human rights, as well as security. But each member nation still has independent control of its armed forces, and can make decisions that do not coincide with the rest of the Union. Conspiracy theorists can find "evidence" supporting their paranoid points of view anywhere. This particular agreement is no big whup.
