Overrated? No way - not even close. First, you have to remember that when he was playing, there were no such things as distortion pedals, etc - all of his distortion and cool sound effects were a result of his creativity. Secondly, if you are judging his playing based on radio songs only, I would encourage you to check out some of his other stuff, particularaly his Radio One sessions. There is a song - an instrumental called "Driving South" - on there that is just SMOKIN'. And lastly, I consider him great for the same reason Clapton is considered great - not for blazing speed, or intricate solos, but for the feeling, the emotion, the playing invokes. Check out some of Jimi's obscure stuff - he was a true virtuoso.

I have been playing guitar for 30 years. There have been some moments over the years that something extraordinary happens when I have felt "one" with the guitar. They are completely unrehearsed and improvisional. It's like an out of body experience where you are watching yourself onstage. Sometimes I've been lucky enough to catch it on tape but never reproduce it. I think almost every guitar player knows what I'm talking about. The difference is that rather than have those occasional moments, Jimi Hendrix seemed to live in that moment. I hope you get it now.

He was both revolutionary and inventive. He wrote and played in a way not seen before, which really spoke to the culture of the 60s. Also the fact that he died so young has helped to create the legend.

Because he created a new style of playing a guitar. No one had heard the national anthem played the way that he played it. He played a right handed guitar left handed. The strings were upside down.

he was pretty revolutionary for his time and many still think of him as the ultimate guitar player. there are a few of his tunes that i like but as a whole, he's not one of my favorites. maybe you had to be trippin' to appreciate his music.
