No. You have to pay for the copies.

The taxpayers pay to produce, complete, file, & record the originals.

If someone wants a copy someone has to pay people to search the records, make the copy, & stamp the certification on them. Who should pay if not the individuals who want copies?

In the UK the death cerificate is free, however if you want certified copies yes, you have to pay, as you do for certified copies of birth certificates and marriage certificates. I personally think that you should get 4 certified copies of a death certificate as you need to send then to so many differnt agencies/companies etc, but then they do send them back, just takes forever to sort everything out if you're always waiting for them to return documents.

It's outrageous when you're widowed young too!

Legal papers always cost. It's a good idea to get several copies of a death certificate just as it is to get more than one copy of a birth certificate. I'm so sorry for your boyfriend in the loss of his mother. Hopefully he has adult relatives to look after the details and do all the necessary arrangements in his best interests.

I am sure that the first copy of the death certificate is free.

But it does cost if you want extra copies.

My gran passed away in September of this year, and I went with my parents to register her death.

People like banks want copies of the certificate as they will not accept photocopies.

So that is when they charge you for them.

Yes. Funny thing is I can not remember paying it for either of my parents nor can I remember paying a fee for the birth certificates of my children. these things pass in rather a blur

I would imagine whether and how much you pay varies by where you live.

I think that they should give you one copy for free. And then if you need more certified copies (most places don't require them), I think that it is legitimate that you have to pay.

Your birth certificate was paid for by your parents.
All certificates issued by the local authority births and deaths registration unit must be paid for, or do you expect the rate payers to have to pay for them.

Let's see what in this life is free?

The air we breath is free....don't have to pay for it unless you are not physically able to breath all the healthy air and you need to buy some oxygen.

What else?

What else?

Nothing.....
