I am being Induced in 3 days and for the past couple of weeks I have had loose stools. Im not sure if it is diarrhea but I do get the upset stomach and feeling of I HAVE TO GO NOW!! I know that this can be a sign of labor but nothing yet! I really dont want to have to worry about having diarrhea during labor so is it ok for me to take imodium the day before and the day of labor? Does it make you constipated at all? I have heard of some hospitals not letting you go home until you made a bowel movement so I dont want to make myself constipated! So does this stuff really work that well? Also, I was reading about enemas so you dont go while pushing the baby out...are hospitals still doing this? Thanks to any and all answers/tips!

Please do not take immodium before labor...sorry, but it is stupid to be vain like that. I was in labor for my first child for 49 hours, and pushed for almost 2...I believe I poo-ed but TRUST ME....its not embarassing, after passing gas several times while the dr. is 'down there' and accidentally kicking the nurse in the head..it is something the doctors deal with on a regular basis...immodium can cause extra gas aswell...you will be a lot more comfortable if you just let "flow" Plus, if you are in labor, you may very well sit on the toilet...and if your there, if you've got loose bowels...just all the better:)

What should I avoid?

Imodium may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.
Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink.
Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you are taking an antibiotic and you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, call your doctor. Do not use Imodium to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.

Don't take it. Let your system do its own thing. Even if you do go while pushing the baby out, you probably wont even know. The nurses have big chucks, (diaper like padding) that they keep under your butt while you are in labor. They change them all the time because of the water breaking, leakage, blood etc. Most of the time if you go the nurse changes it and you wont even know it. Just relax. This stuff happens all the time and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. Just be excited that you will be able to see your baby soon.

You can take Imodium when pregnant but don't do it before your labor. You'll be cleaned out by the time you go in, just don't eat much for the next three days and drink lots of water. I was the same way. They don't do enemas anymore. Good luck!

maybe its your bodys way of cleaning out before birth !!! dont stop it or they will have to give you a enema ,, just let your body take care of that!

excuse me this is something i asked a few women in my family because that's something i wonder i dont want to poo on the table! but it does not make sense to let you go push and have birth with full bowels

this gives some info ,,, about enemas being used in the past

That was my concern of giving birth. I will be so embarrased if I poop while pushing my baby out. But, when i took Child Birth prep class, the nurse assured us that it's a normal thing. She said don't worry about it, it happens most of the time. If it does happen, the nurse will clean it out quickly and you won't even know it. I wouldn't take anything if i were you, but if you so concern, you should ask your OB.

Hi - I wouldn't recommend it. You need to be empty, its much better for your system. What's happening now is normal and better out than in. You are right about them wanting to ensure you've had a movement post-delivery to make sure your system is undamaged and working correctly. If you do "disgrace yourself" during delivery don't worry. They are used to it and it won't be a surprise. Have the epidural and you won't even know if it does happen. All the best.
