this must be a dumb question

This is not a dumb question at all. It is something that every one needs to get done or make sure it is done. Just telling folks what you want is not really good enough. It really needs to be in WRITING. There is a way to do it with out costing a lot of money and you don't need a lawyer to do it either. You can get the do-it-yourself kits, fill it out, get a witness or two to sign it, get it notarized and it is a done deal. I have done this for my parents and myself. There are several types of them you can get. You can get the Last Will and Testament, Living Trust Agreement, and the Living Will w/Durable Power of Attorney. These are all do-it-self kits. All you have to do is pick the one you want and then fill it out. You are never to young to get this done as none of us know how much longer that we have left to live.

Never too late and not a dumb question! I have all the paperwork to do so, but have not done it yet. I should put that one closer to the top of my list. I really do need to fill out that DNR.

This isn't really a "senior citizens" only question (the category it's in). Everyone should have one or at least have expressed to their spouse or parents how they feel about life support, quality of life, etc. I do have a living will and even though it was like pulling teeth with my husband he did finally do his too. We live in Missouri and can actually get a packet thru our state's attorney general's office for free.

Although I don't actually have a living will, I have made my wishes concerning these issues plain to my family. They also know I want to be an organ donor and it's listed on my license. We made wills and included information concerning our cremation. These are things we should all do or discuss with our family so they do not have to make these decisions for us, during very difficult times.

We haven't got it in writing yet but it is top of our "to-do" list for 2008. We've spoken to our 17y/o daughter about our wishes especially in relation to what she must/should do if me and her dad have an accident and end up on a life support machine. Unfortunately for her all of this will fall on her shoulders as our eldest refuses point blank to talk about our deaths.
We've got all our important paperwork in one security box and in a place where Steffi will know where to find it. Me and Tc know what we want for our respective funerals....music, hymns, clothes people should wear (anything colourful), and strict instructions to celebrate our lives not mourn our death. I, originally, said that I wanted to be cremated but Steffi got upset and said she wants me to have a burial so that she can come to the cemetary whenever she wants to talk to me. I told her that she will be able to talk to me whenever and where-ever she is but I appreciate her wishes and said she can over-rule me if she wants on that one!
Living wills are a good idea but all family members should be aware of it as there can be awful arguments at such times about someone's final wishes. Very good question xx
