Hi. I've just started ballroom dance and need to buy a proper pair of shoes. My teacher directed me to a good website and said that heel height is a matter of personal preferance.
I'm very comfortable walking in high heels, but is it a good idea to get shoes of lower height for practice?
Thanks for advice :)

If you're very comfortable in high heels there is no need to get low heels for practice. I assume you're buying just one pair, right?
Get something that you feel very stable in.
A closed toe social shoes is probably the best beginner shoe - it it soft enough for Latin and it has enough structural support for Standard (Smooth). Get something with 3/4 shank, that would be the best. You can't point your toes well with the full shank of professional Standard shoes and you can't do toe releases with 1/2 shank of professional Latin shoes.
An example of a model that I'd recommend is Stephanie 15015 or 15016 on this page

What I had as my first pair was Capezio BR09 but they have weak cradboard shank so they died in 6 months.

Supadance, International, Dance Naturals are all really good but they are expensive. If money is not an issue, go for them (or equivalent in quality) and your feet will thank you.

I've been using the same pair of dance shoes for about a year now for my Salsa. The place i got mine the price range for mine were USD $80 - 129 but I also got a coupon from my teachers that was 2 for 1 so a friend and I split the costs. And believe me they make a world of difference. They were a lot lighter than my street shoes and the soles made it easier to do my turns.

Supadance are good for ballroom but crap when it comes to their latin shoes but its more about learning what shoe suits you. Like I cant wear all brands because my feet are long and skinny and some brands shoes are quite wide. And I cant wear all styles because of my foot shape so its a matter of trying different brands and styles until you find one that suits you. It took me years till I found a pair of shoes that were perfect for me!

Oh for people who gave me a thumbs down for saying Supadance latin shoes are crap, how come there are only 1 or 2 latin couples Sudadance sponsers but about 15 ballroom couples? Its because latin dancers dont want to be sponsered by Supadance cos they know they'll have to wear Supadance shoes.

I reckon 2 inchor 2 and a half inch is suitable to start off with
