Why would you finance something that goes DOWN in value?

BUY cars, don't finance them.

Nobody will waste your time, and you will get a better deal, if you are following the 100% down plan.

If you were ready to make payments starting LAST year, where is all the money you would have been sending to the finance company? Unless you wasted it all on crap, you should have a hefty amount of money in your car fund.

If you have a credit score of 788, that mean you have credit history. But let me ask you this, do you ever had any credit cards? Department store credit cards? Gas card? Applied any loans before?

If all above answer is "yes". I don't understand why the auto loan place (where did you go) told you that you have no credit history. You do have checking account at a bank, right? Does your bank offer auto loan? If so, try your bank. I think there might be some mixed up on all these. If you know your credit score, I assume you have your own credit report (a hard copy). If you apply at your bank, bring your credit report with you when you talk to the loan officer. Good luck!

How old are you? If you have an apartment, they must have run a credit report or asked for rental history. If you live at home, establish credit with a department store credit card - they are the easiest to get. Within a few months, you will begin a credit report. With a good job and this depressed economy, car dealers will lower requirements to sell more product. There are even some lots that will sell cars just based on a reliable income. Ask.

In regards to phone calls/mailings, they send that to everyone to generate interest in their product. They don't really evaluate you until you call in. Now you're on their list, and they sell your info to other companies.

When you get so-called prescreened offers, they've really only screened for basic info (including your name and address) but have to run a full credit report to qualify you if you choose to contact them. So the prescreen and full reports are obviously different - I've seen lots of these in my mailbox, until I opted-out with the credit bureaus to stop receiving them (I'd hate for somebody to intercept an offer from my mailbox and apply for it using my name - - it happens often!)

You need to build your credit history. Start by applying for credit at places you'd actually buy an item or two at. Macy's, JCPenney, Kohl's - - buy some underwear, dress pants. Target, Walmart - self explanatory. Gas cards. Citibank has an online service called BillMeLater, where you buy items online and pay it off later.

Okay, so now you've applied for some credit. Maybe you spent $100 at Macy's on new shoes. Pay it off - but not immediately. Split it out over 3-4 months. Why? If you pay it off right after buying it, there is NO BALANCE reported to the credit bureaus, so they have nothing to BASE YOUR CREDIT SCORE upon. Be reasonable with your spending, and have a payoff plan BEFORE YOU SPEND.

Last point. At anywhere you apply for credit, you need to know the CARD ISSUER. The Walmart Visa (i think it's a visa, anyway) credit card is issued by GE Money Bank, but so is the Ikea credit card, which is NOT a Visa/MC type card. Target's store and Visa cards are issued by Target National Bank (yes, they have their own bank). Circuit City's cards are issued by Chase.

The reason why this last point is important is that a particular issuer may have apprehension on giving you too much credit within their own system... in other words, dont go applying for 10 credit cards that ALL happen to come from GE Money Bank... that's a red flag for them.

And most of all, KNOW YOUR LIMITS, and KNOW THOSE INTEREST RATES AND FEES.

Good luck.

Try applying online for loans too. I was in a similar situation a few years ago and when the dealers were telling me I didn't have a credit history I applied online and got approved by Capital One Auto Finance. The more places you apply, the better chance you have of getting approved.
