How did progresives propose to extend opportunities to all citizents?

Were they successful in these efforts? Why ot why not?

They wanted to make things available to everyone in the nation that had only been available to those with some wealth.

They were not successful. Trying to get everyone something is generally idealistic and not at all realistic. It costs too much and takes more effort than people think.

Maybe certain political candidates could learn something from that...
