He attempted to push Catholicism onto the country.

He made a move toward a coup, but wasn't in any way subtle in doing it. He went about replacing judges and military leaders with Catholics and made it clear that he wanted everyone else that way.

Parliament, led by the "Seven Notables" asked for William of Orange to take over the crown of England and remove James.

This fairly well settled who ruled England. When Parliament could replace the king and his entire house in favor of another, it showed that they were on top.
