Muslim architecture and art follows the same patterns, no matter where you go.
Muslim law forbids in the making of images of people or animals or even most things. Instead they frequently make geometric designs or the like. The complicated star patterns and latices are so common because of this.

When Spain freed itself from Moorish rule, they didn't want to be anything like the Muslims, but some of the influences remained in the architecture.

Let's see : I was born and raised in Spain ( North), in
the Northern Regions of Spain, the Muslim art as well as
cultural background is not very prominente, since the
Muslins never reached these regions, due to the cold
weather as well as the difficulty to fight with the spanish
people in the northern mountains. However the middle
south parts of the Country, were occupied by the Muslims
for over 700 years. Obviously these years of ocupation
created a muslim culture, muslim art and muslim religion
The last muslim Emir driven out of Spain was in 1492
This last bastiom of (Reconquest) was Granada. The
same year when Colombus made the voyage to the new
world. Mostly of the Muslim art and culture can be fund
in the south of the Country, Mosques, The Alahambra
Castles and very well preserved monuments erected in
different cities and towns, where the Muslim Emirs ruled
for 700 years. The Muslim influence in the South of the
Country, it is very visible today : The people, their food
their culture, the dances and flamenco songs, more attached
to the muslim heritage, than the rest of the Country.

Islamic art was very influential & very significant, not just Islam art but also Islam as whole, the Muslims gave the West 3 meals a day routine, Muslims gave freedom to Jews Christians & others in Muslim Spain unlike Christian Spain you might have to look it up on Yahoo or Wikipedia to get more insight into this, but i will say is this that some Spanish ppl living now who are Christians still keep Arab/Muslim Customs since they were so attached to them & so fund of them.

While under Moorish control, Spain was known as Al' Andalus. Try typing that into a search engine, as it will probably work better than "medieval Spain under Muslim control".

Some of the churches over there are basically mosques with a church-like tower, or so I've been told. I think that muslim art used much more arcs and curves than 'christian' art did at that time.
