That is very comendable of them Kirst but if there are children involved how do you explain to them that Santa has given their presents away? A better idea would be to cut down on the amount spent on each present and then the rest that would have been spent be donated to charity. That way everyone benefits.

We do both - Its so much fun to pick things out for each other and share the excitement of Christmas morning. We give to our favorite charities all year round, and give to Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army at Christmas.
After we open our presents and have breakfast, we spend a few hours at a local restaurant serving. The restaurant serves anyone for free on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas and we volunteer as wait staff.

I think it's a wonderful, selfless thing to do if that's what you want to do. I personally like buying for others if I can afford to. I always try to give a little extra to charities and I especially give of my time to help out the community. That's what the holidays are all about.

We do things like that in our family, but we make smaller donations to different charities and still get eachother a small amount of gifts. It wouldn't be the same with NO gifts at all, although I do think some families exchange too many gifts!

Dear KK,
When I was a younger man, I drove through a particularly bad part of our city where the homeless slept in cardboard boxes on the sidewalks in the rain and cold. The homeless here included infants and school aged children.
One night I was reading my Bible when I came upon a passage that went something like this, "He who does this for the least does this for me as well."
I've been donating to the Los Angeles Mission, a drug treatment and homeless shelter, for some twenty years. I don't know if my small contribution has helped. I'd like to think so. I hope so.
Peace, Alan K.

That is so lovely to do that and it must be cheaper too you could go on holiday with what we all spend.
I always send something in to my own charitys I support.
