We've had two, both have died. Tried everything!
I can't seem to find some reliable information. Everything seems to contradict itself, do they like light? do tehy require lots of water? nothing seems to work

Because you may be watering them too much or they may not be getting enough light and they do not like to be bothered alot they thrive on neglect just like aloe plants. So next time water the plant when the soil is dry to the touch, place the plant in a sunny window and don't bother it. I am not saying that you do bother it but if you do don't if you don't sorry just wanted you to know.

I keep mine in a dark corner, but I use an uplight to illuminate it. I likes light, but indirect light. If you put it directly in the sunlight it will burn. One way to tell if you have direct or indirect light coming through a window is to see of the surface the light is touching is warm. If it is then don't put your plant there. The light should be either filtered by a sheer or set the plant outside of the sun light. As for watering, water it when the top 2-3 inches of soil is dry. Just stick your finger in and if it comes out completely dry then it is time to water.
This is how I do it and I've had mine quite a while.

with mine I let nature take care of them outdoors they die back in winter and are reborn in spring if it is a dry season very little water I hope this helps

You have to water it with your liquid assets. Often.
