'Enola Gay' was the Boeing B-29 Super Fortress, which dropped the first atomic bomb to be used in combat.
The bomb's codename was 'Little Boy' and it weighed 4.4 tonnes. It exploded in an aerial burst, at 8:16am local time, on August 6th 1945, over the city of Hiroshima, Japan.
This attack and a similar attack on the city of Nagasaki on August 9th 1945 (also by a B-29, named 'The Bock's Car', which dropped a bomb codenamed 'Fat Man'), led to the Japanese surrender.
The Commander of 'Enola Gay' was Paul W. Tibbets - he had named the aircraft after his mother. When Tibbets observed the explosion, he is alleged to have said, "Oh my God - what have we done?"
'Enola Gay' has now been completely re-assembled and is on display at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration and Storage Facility in Suitland, Maryland, U.S.A.
