What is the preposition used with the word "encompass"?

"The varieties of abilities encompassed by ..."

This is the sentence - I don't know if by is right or not.

Encompass is a verb. It does not take a preposition.

EDIT: Yes, in that case "by" would be correct.

If you think of "encompassed by" as being analogous to "contained by," you might consider "within" as well.
