Could someone give be te basics of your your Primary slection process works in the USA...In Canada, all Party leaders are chosen by delgates at a convention...

What are all these primaries? They are always talkign about Iowa, and New Hampshire.....to me as an outsider, what relevance would some small state like Iowa have? You don't hear them say, OH the NEW YORK, and TEXAS And CALIFORNIA primaries..only small sounding states....

In the primaries, party members vote for their favorite candidate. Both parties will also have conventions in late summer. The party's candidate is selected in the convention. But the selection process is by state. If a candidate wins the primary election in a state, he gets the state's votes in the first ballot at the convention. If a second ballot is needed the delegates are free to vote for whomever they choose.

Iowans get together in caucuses in early January. One week later, New Hampshire has it's primaries. Candidates are trying to win early to gain momentum.

We sure do know how to waste money on elections in the US.

The small states could create a bandwagon effect on voting in the larger states. In Iowa they have a Convention, which people have to pay for and attend in person. Not very democratic

History shows whoever wins the first 3 or 4 primaries gains momentum and wins them all. By tiime NY Texas and Cali has a say the nominee will have already been chosen.

The people who are members of each states party , vote on their primary day for their candidate of choice. Each state has its own primary date. You hear about Iowa & NH , just because they are the first primaries
