In your situation, the only advantage is that you won't need a cable to exchange data (phone numbers, pictures, etc.) between your computer and your phone or to use your phone as a modem.

Bluetooth uses a lower frequency that infrared, which translates to less energy consumption. Your bluetooth will allow you use a wireless mouse, keyboard, etc. without having to plug in one of those stupid dongles, and since they are bluetooth devices the batteries will last longer. It will also allow you to transfer music from your laptop to your phone wirelessly, and visa-versa. Depending on the phone and the software that came with it, you can use your bluetooth phone as a modem for your laptop. Establish a partnership between the two, set up a "dial up" connection for your laptop through the phone, and you have Internet anywhere your phone gets a signal.

Those are just a few uses. You can also connect to other bluetooth enabled laptops to make build a network for file sharing. Just remember that the devices have to be within a 30 ft range to accomplish a connection.

You can use the same headset with your phone and your laptop.

Depending on your phone you may be able to transfer information between your phone and the laptop via bluetooth.

If you have a bluetooth already for your phone you can use the same one. People like to chat online and alot of times dont want to use their cell min. to do this. For the most part people use this for online gameing. If you dont intend to play online games... I dont really see the point... it depnds on how much of a technology junkie you are.
