If it is federal civil rights, the attorney doesn't have to be admitted into the state to practice law, as long as he/she is admitted to another U.S. District Court - the attorney can then be admitted into the U.S. District Court in the state where the incident occurred (and sue) or associate with a local law firm and be admitted pro hac vice.

You can challenge the state law in federal court, as long as there is some federal question too...

Try contacting Johnnie Cochran's old firm (Johnnie is now deceased, but I think his firm lives on)...

there's probably no such thing as a "national practicing lawyer" bc that would mean being admitted to every bar in the nation, and then maintaining an active license.

response to 'Star': Every US Dist Ct has different rules of admission. Further, an attorney can also be admitted 'pro hac vice' to another State for practice on a particular case. however, that doesn't help this person if she needs an attorney to make an appearance in NY if the attorney lives in CA. that's called venue. and associating with another firm--is that really helping the person by having to pay more than 1 attorney?
