sometimes at christmas my mom, who unfortunately has dreadful taste in clothing, buys me hideous things. i simply will never wear them. what's the point of keeping them? of course i return them, and with the money i can buy something i like better.
is this a problem? i've always done this as have my two sisters.
someone told me that was mean. is it? don't you return gifts you dislike? its a waste of money if you dont, isnt it?

hmmm. Touchy subject. Have you told her you don't really like the clothes? If not, consider that. Ask her if maybe she could come with you and buy the clothes with you, together. Or ask for gift cards instead, with what she was planning to spend.

my mom and I have had a long standing agreement that anything she gives me is fair game for returning. We make a day of it the day after christmas and if sonething doesn't fit or I don't like it, we take it back and find whatever I want.

it isn't mean I don't think. And usually I always give a gift receipt with things in case it doesn't work out. And really unless the person really knows you and your style or size, i don't think that clothing is a good gift in general.

I don't think its ungreatful at all. You simply just don't like her taste in clothing. I do the same thing. I would rather someone return what I got them & get something they like than to keep it and never wear it, thats such a waste.

Maybe since your mom doesn't like gift cards, you could take her out and point out what you would like or pick, that way she's sure to get you soemthing you like

If you tell your mom you hate them and are going to return them, then yeah. But if you just return them, I don't see anything wrong with that. I just might tell her to just give me gift cards or money or something instead of her picking it out.

Why is it ungrateful? Its not mean, I would do the same thing, because that way you're not wasting the money and getting something you will like and wear. So have at it!

i don't know if it's mean
but its not nice either
i think you should ask your parents for money for christmas
so you can buy your own clothes without hurting anyones feelings
or maybe you guys can go to the mall together and you can give her an idea of what you want

Depends on your attitude when you get the gift. If you're pleased that she thought of you, that's great. If you're snippy and unhappy at having to go out yourself and think that it would be simpler for her to give you the money, that's ungrateful.

I do this sometimes too, but just make sure that your mom does not catch you returning it. Make sure that you tell her that you love it and plan on wearing it to school on Monday, but don't really. Hoep this helped.
P.S. it is not ungratful, don't worry.

Why dont you just ask your mom for a gift card...or $$$..so you can just get what you want...if she wants to get you something, go with her to pick it out...or have one of your sisters go with her...that way, you know it wont be hideous

Im sure you mum would prefer it if you got gifts that you liked so there is nothing wrong with simply returing it and buying something else .
