To check for a slipping clutch you put the tranny in 4th gear and rev the motor to about 3,500 rpm and release the clutch pedal suddenly. If the motor does not stall immediately and just spins and slows down you have a bad clutch and should replace the disc, pressure plate and clutch release bearing. A motor that stalls when you suddenly release the clutch in a higher gear from a dead stop is still good. If the clutch is hydraulic the pedal should release about 2" from the floor, a clutch pedal that releases at the top of the pedal stroke is another indication of a worn disc.

If you think the clutch is slipping, try putting the handbrake on and go to pull off as you normally do.
If the engine stalls then its OK.
You could have a blocked exhaust that gives the impression the clutch is slipping,if it is blocked then this will greatly increase fuel consumption.

If the clutch is slipping your engine rpm will increase but the speed your travelling wont. This situation will not help your fuel consumption.

Clutch goes round = car moves. Clutch not going round or is slipping = engine working road wheels not.
