Before we talk about megabyte (MB) and gigabyte (GB), let's talk about the kilobyte (kB). Because computing is based on binary numbers, number of bytes is convenient to count using the binary system. Conveniently, 2 to the power of 10 is 1,024, so at some point it was agreed that 1,024 bytes will be referred to as a kilobyte (normally, "kilo" means 1,000, but for computers, an exception was made). The same convention was used when the amount of bytes in use grew, so people all of a sudden had a need for mega-, giga- (and now even tera-) bytes.

So 1 kB = 1,024 B, 1 MB = 1,024 kB, 1 GB = 1,024 MB, and 1 TB = 1,024 GB.

They should be giving you some specs that are in MB or GB. For example they should tell you memory, which should be at least 2 GB nowadays. Hard drive, which should be 60 GB and up. Memory card ram is also a possibility, and that depends on what you want to do with the system and if you need to play the latest video games (512 MB), or you really don't care about video games (shared memory video). So, hope that helps.

GB is Giga bytes or 2^30 bytes
MB is mega bytes or 2^20 bytes
Speed of a computer would be how fast the prosseser (CPU) runs, in HZ or hertz you will want to be looking at about 2.6 to 3 Ghz or Giga Hertz

GB=gigabytes which is referring to your hard drive. Now a days, new computers come with huge hard drives, so what you want it for, you'll be ok with whatever you buy.

MB=megabytes which is referring to the computer memory. You want at least 512mb, but 1 gb would be better.

1000mb = 1gb
