I was watching a judge show on tv with my boyfriend and he asked me "how do these judges enforce their decisions because they aren't in an actually court room. What jurisdiction do they have and what can they do to you if you don't pay up?" I'm not sure of the answer. He thinks they can't do anything and I don't want him to be right. He thinks he's always right!!!

They pay. The People's Court setup was that a pool of X dollars was set up, the winner got the amount of the judgment, and the parties split the remainder.

While they use court-like trappings, you should consider those courts a binding arbitration.

They are actual judges, but have no legal authority or jurisdition over the cases they hear. Both parties sign a waiver before appearing, stating they will agree with the judge's decision.

If you read the credits at the end, the show, and the sponsors, actually pay the winner of the court action.

They pay it for you.

Watch the credits at the end of the show, it explains the process right on screen.

It says something like "Both the plaintiff and defendant receive payment from a fund for appearing. The amount of the judgment (if any) is paid from the fund and the balance divided among the parties"

Some are real judges - Judge Judy, Judge Joe Brown, Judge Marilyn Milian - others are not. They can enfore payment because the litigants have signed a mediation agreement that binds them by law to the judgment and it's a judgment that cannot be listed in any bankruptcy. If the judgment is not paid, the litigant can be held in contempt and may even do jail time.
