Check to see if you are plugged in correctly.

Also Check to see if you have the correct and updated drivers for your nic. This is the biggest issue I see when end users reformat their computers.

If your nic is enabled and functioning properly, is it set to static or DHCP? If you just set it to DHCP (if your router is also) it shoudl connect fine.

I hope this helps, good luck

Well first off, and this is just an opinion. You UPGRADED to XP.
Next:
You need to find out if you got your network drivers installed correctly when you did the re-install.
Start --> Control Panel --> Network connections.
If you don;t see anything, you've got no drivers for your card. That will do it.
Next step:
Start --> Control Panel --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager Tab.
Look for network adapters: You may see that there is a a red X or an excaimation point next to it. These warnings can help track down the problems.

XP drivers for your NIC are most likely available from your manufacturers web-site. You may need to use an alternate computer to connect and download. You can use a flash key to get the drivers to the computer that needs them.

Good Luck!

I have a linksys router and wi fi card. They both were new. The software that came with them didn't work! Had to make calls to linksys support to get the router installed. Tried using linksys support for the wi fi card but was unsuccesful. I finally downloaded, from linksys a program that did finally work. good luck. BTW it has nothing to do with the downgraded computer, it's just lousy software from linksys.

you probably did no longer point out what variety of prompt risk-free practices you had setup on the BT Homehub. If I undergo in thoughts wisely they contain WEP configured by using default yet do help the WPA and WPA-2 ( a much extra take care of encryption mechanism, as WEP is next to ineffective). while you're using WPA, which for sure you could desire to be in case you could. My wager is that the 2nd hand workstation has an previous community card. The older enjoying cards did no longer help WPA purposes because it is somewhat extra moderen than WEP. if it is the case there is not any longer lots you're able to do yet downgrade your hub risk-free practices to WEP, and alter all the workstation's to apply a sparkling WEP key. To proove this set the hub to apply WEP and then see if the previous workstation will connect using the hot WEP key. If it does you have your answer. Then circulate the Hub as much as WPA and notice if it is going to nevertheless connect using the hot WPA key, if no longer you're actually particular you have an answer. it is attainable to replace the firmware on the laptops community card, yet firmware updates could be somewhat complicated and that's extremely attainable to fully nuke the gadget you're upgrading if issues circulate incorrect, so pay attention. yet another determination could be to disable the onboard community card and purchase a PCMCIA or USB community card for the workstation that does help WPA, as all cutting-part card will those days. it is probable your superb wager in case you opt to maintain your routers risk-free practices by using staying with WPA.
