I was looking at the 64MB cards but I'm hearing that Sony does not make these and that people are having problems with them. The PS2 is my son's and was wondering if someone could tell me if I need to get more than the 8MB and if so, which brand is the best?

Honestly, I really recommend getting a Sony brand memory card. I have had terrible luck with offbrand memory cards. I've had several of my files become corrupted, and this is quite common when using a non-Sony card. I'm not sure if all non-Sony cards have this problem. (I was using a Nyko brand, so steer clear of that brand for sure!) But I've never experienced any problems with the Sony brand memory card.

EDIT - You would be surprised at how much an 8MB card will hold. If you think he needs more memory, just buy a 2nd card.

Yeah just get the Sony. It'll definitely work! Some of the aftermarket brands don't get along well with the PS2 system. I wasted $40 on a fancy controller once that worked about 50% of the time. Ugh! Now it's Sony or nothing for me!

For saving PS1 games you need a PS1 grey memory card For saving PS2 games you need a PS2 black memory card Always buy the official sony memory cards to avoid disappointment.
