I wanted to see what kind of promotions they were sending to their customers. Is there anything illegal about doing that? I want to tell my boss, but I don't want him to get mad at me over it.

if it is for research purposes you should tell your boss that you have been working on a project... if it is for personal use, don't say anything! they could consider you disloyal and fire you. always CYA!

That is no more illegal than reading something in the newspaper about your competitor. I admire your ethical concerns, though. Your competitor is offering the information to the public. You are the public.

If it's a public newsletter, it shouldn't be a problem.
It it's intended only for customers and vendors, it borders on being an ethical issue. Then I wouldn't do it.
