I am going to have to assume a LOT, as you did not say what this discussion is on, concerning what car.
I will assume that you have a manual clutch and Mechanical adjustment. If it is badly out of adjustment, you cannot push the pedal down far enough to completely disengage the clutch and so the gears are under tension during shifting.
If hydraulic clutch, same thing, but no adjustment, but you could either have air in the system or low on fluid.

Several things are possibly causing the problem.
First its possible that the clutch is not releasing fully.
Secondly its possible that that gear box linkage between the gear stick and gear box is out of alignment or worn.
Thirdly there may be air in the hydraulics of the clutch pedal.

switch the cer of it it goes in gear fine not runnig it is you clutch but before you change like every body talling you to do check if it is a manual clutch cable it may be adjustable if hydrualic it may have a leek there is also a small possibilty that something may have broken i.e on v.w cars the peddle housing breaks the weld

Worn out clutch plate or clutch thrust bearing. Not a cheap repair.

what type of transmission is it what is happening

if it is an automatic it could be that you are not pressing the brakes

if it is a manual it could be that you are not pressing the clutch or you hve worn out synchronizers

either the brake switch (if its an automatic)
or the clutch needs to be replaced (if its a manual transmission)

you could be low on gear oil or your syncro's are worn, I would check the gear oil level first though

What kind of car? If it has an hydraulic clutch the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder is losing pressure.
www.autozone.com can tell you what type you have.
