Ok - I checked similar questions here but I couldn't really find anything helpful. Maybe you guys can help me.
Here is my problem:
When I turn on my Sony VAIO VGN-FS750P, on the top left corner says "No operating system found". Now when I run BIOS (F2), the system finds the Hard Disc and it says there the kind of HD(Toshiba 100GB...). I have the boot discs (re-installation discs which bring computer to its factory settings) but when I put it in the CD-rom it doesn't do anything. I checked on BIOS, the CDrom is the first on the Boot list. But still when I put the boot disc on the cd-rom it doesn't automatically run like it is supposed to do.
Now, before I order a new hard drive I want to make sure that it actually is fried before I go and spend $120+ for it.
Can anyone help me, or should I just order a new hard drive?

Thanks

The boot disc is original from Sony , actually just opened and its proper one, not scratched or anything. My CD drive is fine as well. I even tried booting it from a different drive (external) just to make sure that CD/DVDdrive is working but it didnt work. I also put a different hard drive from my other laptop (same interface ATA) just to see if there is any life in the computer. Same message came up "no operating system found". I'm not a computer amateur. I know quite a lot of things about hardware and software but I thought a professional might answer my question.
To be honest, im not sure if HD is bad since i didnt get anything from the other hard disc i tried from a different laptop.

Another thing, my CD/DVD drive does not open, so I have to open it mechanically with the pin on that little hole on the drive in order to put the disc in,maybe this detail will help you answer my question and find a solution. (remember i tried booting from external cd drive as well and didnt work)

It is most likely the HDD has blown if none of the recovery disks work.

VERY IMPORTANT - DO NOT FORMAT your disk. There was a genius that suggested this, so I want to make sure you start there.

The disk may or may not be corrupt, and it likely is. However, if the data is important enough, computer repair companies like 1hoursupport.com can save your data and repair your laptop.

If your Windows install does not work, there are a few possible reasons: bad CD, bad CD-ROM or possibly an improperly copied CD (is this the original? is is scratched?).

Have you tried hitting F12 at the Vaio boot screen to bring the device selection? A vanilla Windows CD should say something like the following (white on black):
"Press any key to boot from CD". Hit the space bar here.

If the drive is dead, The Windows install (white on blue) will tell you within 5 minutes of boot.

The Sony CD or DVD should tell you there is a problem or freeze.

In that case you can look into data recovery options or go shopping for new drive (make sure you know if it is an IDE or a SATA drive.)

The computer not booting off your CD ROM has NOTHING to do with your hard disk. Even if there wasn't a hard disk or if it was DEAD you'd still get a certain way through booting a BOOTABLE CD-ROM until a time when the CD might need to write some temp files to the hard disk.

You need to ensure that the CD ROM you are booting off, is bootable. Try it on a friends computer, or try another CD ROM that you know is bootable. If you boot order is set correctly & the CD is bootable, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to boot off it regardless.

If the BIOS sees your hard drive - that's a good thing, but also whilst you're at it, make sure your BIOS is aware of your CD ROM drive also.

In my personal opinion, I think it's unlikely that you've lost whatever was on the drive - it's just possible that the Master Boot Record (MBR) has been wiped/corrrupted.

It is unlikely, but there is a small chance your hard drive may be out of commision - but that would be the last thing on my mind in the first instance.

Really, you can only diagnose this through booting of the CD ROM drive or even bootable USB key if you're feeling brave.
Good luck, let us know how you get on!

ps. Liz - it's a laptop not a desktop!

If the recovery disk are the type that you had to make when you first got the laptop, theres a possibility that the burning procedure didn't work. If they are pre made recovery disks, one of them should be labeled something like Operating System, or better yet, an actual Windows install cd. When it boots it should say something like "Press any key to continue installation...".

If the restore disk isn't working, I would try to find an OEM Windows disk. Any computer repair shop should have a billion of them. Just make sure it's the same version of Windows that you have a serial number for.

If BIOS is saying that the hard drive is there, but it's not booting, it's possible the drive is bad or the file system got corrupted somehow. Before reinstalling anything, I would test the hard drive. You can download an image of a cd called The Ultimate Boot CD. It's free, and if you can burn a copy of that to a cd, it contains programs for testing hard drives. Test it first to make sure it isn't bad. If it passes testing, go ahead with the reinstall.

If you do find a Windows CD that will boot, try recovery mode first. In recovery mode, run fixboot, fixmbr, and chkdsk /r from the command prompt. It may fix the file system without loosing all your info/data.

Hope that helps.

CD rom AND hard disk giving you trouble?
Looks like an IDE controller problem.
Likely your HDD is fine, along with all of your data, and the IDE port on your motherboard is disconnected or damaged.
Ig you are using SATA and not IDE, could be the same problem.
I would take a look at where the cables go to the motherboard. Give 'em the old jiggle and push.
I'm betting this is a physical disconnection.

If you are ready to do a system restore then you have already come to grips with that you will probably loose all data. I would try formatting the hard drive first and see if there any problems with it formatting. If it won't format then the drive is probably dead. I personally use a win 98 boot disk to format my computer. There are many other methods.

take out the hard disk that you have got in it, check the pins and stuff and then put it back in and make sure its firmly in the hard disk slot.

if that still doesnt work then when you put in your cd check to see if you have anything that says "to change boot order press ??" e.g. press esc. on my laptop

if not then your best bet would be to get a new hard disk

You might have accidentally deleted a file in your operating system that was part of the boot loader. If thats the case, those cd's should have fixed it.

you are supposed to put the installation disk in drive, then restart the computer, then it will ask you to press any key to boot from the disk
