the ipod was the first and is still the best mp3 player. it still has like 80% market share even with all the copycats, that should tell you something. yes they can all play music, but the ipod has the best interface and quality, like all apple products.
the software is easy to use, very instinctive, and the batteries are the best in the industry. you use itunes to manage the music, but it's free and easy, it can find all your wmp songs, or you can easily add them.
the only question is what kind of ipod.
classic if you have a lot of music you want with you all the time. a lot.
touch if you watch videos and you want the big screen, or if you are in a wifi zone often and want to use the internet.
nano if it's mostly for music, for many people the nano is the best choice.
go to an apple store and check them out.

just saying ipod was not teh first. also other mp3 players will work just as good if not better. seeing as alot of what you pay for an ipod is for advertisng the other mp3 players that cost just the same are able to put more things into like the zune which has a very simple software of windows media player that i think is actually easier to use the windows media player. it use to be a replica of it but they changed it up for the new zunes and made the interface much easier

I've asked this question many times.. Not just online but, at various retailers.. Quite frankly NO- the ipod is just one of a strew of mp3 gadets/gismo's... Sony has it's own version of the ipod and it's about $150 at least that was the price at the SONY outlet in Sharon PA/Grove City.. It has a screen, same GB etc.. The accesories seemed cheaper as well. So, I think you can do the same things as ipod but, cheaper.. Also, there's "generic" accessories that allow the ipod/mp3 to charge and be used as an indoor stereo, radio, alarm clock... I work at Kohl's and we have a clock radio, docking station that lights the time/date on the ceiling and it charges the ipod/mp3 its compatible with most players.... It retails for about $80.... I would research it further before buying the IPOD brand..... Good luck

Well, if you buy an iPod, you won't be using Windows Media Player, you'll use the iTunes software.
I have an iPod, and I've worked with PCs and Macs over the years. iTunes is very simple and intuitive, and you should have no problems using it.
Good luck, whichever you choose.

You can't sync anything into any kind of iPod unless you are using iTunes...and as for your question about if you have to do anything other than adding songs to iTunes..you will have to click on the syncs icon..but that depends on your settings anyway
