I going to move outside of the box. Others will recommend Laptops and that good. I just offer another alternative.
I looking for a used Laptop. I figure find something with a dead battery for around $100, mainly RAM of 512 MB or better and a nice Hard Drive and CD/DVD burner if possible. Then I going to Format and install Linux. So, for $100 (May go $150). The OS is free. I have a nice Laptop. Now I mentioned dead battery. When we buy used we not sure of the battery condition and if we price a new battery they can add $100 to our initial cost. It just depends on the Make etc. So, we need to do the math for something new and figure for a new battery. End up spending what we could have bought a new one for.
This what "I" will do and use the extra money for MP3 player and a few other goodies like a wireless card.

Acer laptops are good hardware and for not a lot of money. HP is good, but I'm not sure you'll find one worth your money for under $800, but they do usually have specials. Don't ever buy anything that has Emachine on it! They continue to prove to be bad hardware, every time a power supply goes out, so does the mother board!
