My daughter takes a pacifier and she is 14 months old. I am not planning on taking it away anytime soon. I don't understand why some parents try to rush things and take it away right away. If the baby wants it give it to him/her at nap and bedtime or when they have teething pain. I am grateful for the pacifier - it's really helped me out and until it gets in the way of her speech or she is just getting too old for it I will let her have that comfort. Some parents just like to torture their children by making them grow up so fast!

my son was 6-7 months when he started taking the pacifier and throwing it lol. he did it on his own. my neice is 2 years old and just stopped using her pacifier, on her own as well. she actually took it and threw it in the trash and said no more, same with her bottle.

i think the child may decide on his/her own, but if you are going to try to take the pacifier away, make sure you give the child something else for comfort, like a blanket.

When my son was 10 months old, I simply stopped giving him a pacifier. He gave up the pacifier w/o any trouble at all.

My son was just over 2 years old. I took it away because he was too old for it, and he only had it at night time, not even nap time. I had to wait until April to do it because I do taxes, and couldn't go through any sleepless nights during tax season. He was AWFUL the first night. Not so bad the second and didn't care by the 3rd. My other 2 children never wanted one when they were offered, and I didn't push it!

I took my sons away at 4 months. I went to my aunts and took it from him on the way home. He never wnted it back and it was awesome. My daughter only took hers at night time and it was a few nights of h*** with trying to get her to sleep without it. She was about 7 months and I wish that I'd done it sooner!

7 months, because she started talking. I threw it away and didn't give it back. But she started sucking her thumb and we had to break that when she was 2 1/2. But at least she didn't talk with her thumb in her mouth.

With my daughter, I don't remember exactly when, but it was after about the 30th time she threw it between the crib and the wall and I had to pull the crib out to get it. That got pretty old.

When she was 2 days old. The hospital gave it to her. I hate seeing babies with those things in their mouth all the time. I took it away and she never missed it!

My daughter never really liked it much. We have her one every night for the first 4 months, but it's been a month now since she's had one and it doesn't bother her one bit. I think the earlier you takeit away the easier it is. I just stoppped giving it to her because she never really 'needed' it.
