The German film "M", starring Peter Lorre as a child murderer, is often pointed to as the stylistic inspiration for film noir. Some classic old black&white noir films are Casablanca, Double Indemnity, A Touch of Evil, The Maltese Falcon, Laura, The Big Sleep (the original Bogart version), and The Third Man. More modern films with a noir sensibility include Chinatown, L.A. Confidential, and Fargo.
